As part of efforts to promote the adoption of Palestinian Good Agricultural Practices (PALGAP) among Palestinian farmers, and within the framework of the Community Resilience Building and Livelihoods and Food Security Improvement Project through Good Agricultural Practices, funded by the French Development Agency (AFD) and Islamic Relief France (SIF), and implemented by An-Najah National University (www.najah.edu), specifically its Faculty of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine and the Energy, Water, and Food Security Research Center, in partnership with the Palestinian Economic and Social Development Center (ESDC), and in coordination with the Palestinian Standards Institute (PSI) and the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), a team of engineers from An-Najah University in Tulkarem has completed the collection of soil and irrigation water samples from 107 farmers participating in the project in the Sha'arawiya area (Alar and Atteel).
The collected samples will be analyzed in the laboratories of the Energy, Water, and Food Security Research Center at the university. The soil and water analysis, which focuses on nutrient content and organic matter, is a critical component of obtaining certification for the implementation of Palestinian Good Agricultural Practices (PALGAP).
The purpose of this analysis is to provide scientifically accurate recommendations to farmers, helping them determine the nutritional needs and fertilization programs for their crops, improve soil quality, and enhance agricultural productivity in ways that align with Palestinian Good Agricultural Practices.
This initiative will contribute to achieving agricultural practices that ensure environmental sustainability and increased agricultural productivity, while also contributing to several Sustainable Development Goals, such as Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), by ensuring the quality of water used in agriculture, thus safeguarding crop safety and consumer health. Additionally, it supports Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) by adopting good agricultural practices that reduce resource waste and promote environmental sustainability.
